JEAN DODDS SEMINAR ON THYROID DISEASE, NUTRITION AND VACCINES

August 25, 2012

I recently attended a seminar by Jean Dodds, DVM. She spoke on Thyroid Disorders, Nutrition and Vaccines. She is a delightful person with great knowledge and a super sense of humor. I would recommend her seminar to all.

Things I learned are that T3 and T4 thyroid tests are useless. You need a full panel, which should be started between 10 and 12 months, and then annually until age 6, then it should be done every other year, and none after age 10. Thyroid medicine must be given TWICE a day, and when getting tested, do so between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. because of peaks and valleys. It must also be given without food, and the dog should not eat one hour before or three hours after. Bitches should be tested half way between seasons, and should not be given the parvo vaccine just before breeding. Males should also not be tested when a bitch in the house is in season. Thyroid medicines for dogs are ten times stronger than humans.

Some signs of thyroid disease are fat, lazy and hates the cold. This is when 70% of the tissue has been damaged, hence the reason for an annual test. First signs are behavioral or just not doing right. The thyroid controls everything in the body. Greyhounds take half dose of thyroid meds than other dogs.

Dogs with thyroid disease can be aggressive and have temperament problems.

For dry scaly skin and dandruff, she recommends using Murphy€™s Oil Soap with lemon scent. You wet down the area rub soap in and leave for five minutes, then wipe away.

Do not give distemper vaccine to puppies under six weeks as it can give them distemper. Dogs are protected 48-72 hours after parvo vaccination. Hemopet (Jean€™s lab) will do titer tests for distemper and parvo for $45. Just send blood to them.

Dog with cough may have Kennel Cough, or if there is a fever present could be influenza.

Snake vaccines can be dangerous. She recommends rattle snake avoidance instead.

On Rabies vaccines, if dog is sick, titer can be used in place of the vaccine if verified ill by a vet. Titer cannot be used if dog is healthy. They are in the fifth year of working on the 5-7 year test, which hopefully will allow rabies vaccines to be done every five year. Then they will push for seven years. One-year and three-year vaccines are the same vaccine.

If a dog has really had Parvo, it is immune from Parvo the rest of their lives.

On nutrition, Jean says certain foods will turn on and off certain genes. Dogs susceptible to seizures should not have Rosemary.

If a dog has yeast infection on ears, feet, under arms, etc., use Monistat. Mix with a little olive oil to make easier to apply.

Give Kelp to correct pigmentation.

She told us of a Liver Cleansing diet. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will forward.

For pregnant bitch, feed more carbs at end of term, such as green beans, navy beans, etc.

Soy has effect on thyroid.

Give a little vanilla ice cream to break an epileptic seizure.

Upcoming Shows

Prescott Kennel Club is holding their event in Chino Valley on September 15th and 16th.

AZ White Mountain Kennel Club is having an event in Show Low September 29th and 30th.

There are also a number of fun matches occurring in the Valley and around AZ. Louise is great about sending the info to the club members. These are always a great venue for practicing.

The Lighter Side

Subject: Fwd: Inner Peace-must read to the end. Inner Peace ~

This is so true… If you can start the day without caffeine, If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without alcohol, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, …Then You Are Probably …………… The Family Dog! And you thought I was going to get all spiritual… Have a great day and make some folks smile!

Thanks Kathleen that was great!

For anyone that may be having fly (those nasty buzzing insects) issues here is a quick and easy home remedy Take a zip lock bag half-filled with water and put 5 to 6 pennies in the bag. Hang the bag in the problem area and it keeps the flies and wasps away. Apparently the insects will mistakes the bag for some other insect nest.

Okay, I have not actually tried it but, hey, someone read it on the internet it must be true!!
